Event Information

The Occasionals has been a fluid group of musicians over the past few years. In November 2025 Ashburton Arts Centre hosted The Occasional Collective's first concert with this new line-up. The evening ended with an encore. Percussionist Steve Day writes: “The performance reflected the band’s ability to produce instant compositions, scoping orchestral electronics, modal masterworks, piano and percussion recitals, flute-reed-brass excursions, into one unique unity of purpose.”
The Occasional Quintet's 2023 album, Recording Rites, was praised by critic, Richard Olvetti as “a sublime example of…adding just enough to keep the listener intrigued. Perfectly weighted, it is a joy from start to finish.”

This performance, with a live audience will be recorded & photographed for a bandcamp.com promotion and a limited-edition album release. The band performed here in November 2025. We wouldn't normally host another performance by the same group quite so soon, but when they asked about doing a recording session in front of a live audience on a Sunday afternoon in January, it seemed like a good idea. So here it is. For live recordings to work best, they depend on having a good audience. As usual there are three ticket prices. You're always welcome to choose whichever you like. Here, your presence as well as your ££s is supporting the band; of course we hope you'll also be enjoying some great improvised music. So please feel free to choose any price.
