John Walter is a pianist who formed his first quartet in Bristol in the 1980s. His line ups back then included a young Andy Sheppard on sax, playing John's original tunes. The band's been through many incarnations since then, and John has moved to south, and now north Devon. The current quartet features the distinctive sound of Tim Herniman on both sax
and violin. Tim is a regular member of James Lascelle's Talking Spirits who'll be back here in Ashburton later this year.
Since relocating to Devon in 1990, John has maintained a musical partnership with bassist Marcus Vergette, a cornerstone of the south west jazz scene who performs regularly with the Mike Westbrook bands among many others, and is a favourite musician whenever he appears here in Ashburton. Another player who's becoming increasingly established in these parts since moving from Brighton a few years ago is drummer Preston Prince, who completes the quartet for this performance, where they'll be playing a mix of modern and contemporary jazz including tunes by Keith Jarret, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk…
