Even if you’ve only been keeping even the most cursory ear across contemporary underground songwriters you’ll surely have encountered, and been grabbed by, the heartfelt and unshuttered songs of West Country artist Lande Hekt. Once of Devonian punks, Muncie Girls, over the past 6 or so years Hekt has developed a distinctive solo voice exporing personal and political issues in a way that feels simultaneously specific and universal, all set to a version of powerpop that strips back the bombast you might sometimes associate with all of that. Her new album, Lucky Now, showcases a more mature and confident artist, spinning majestic melodies and a hopeful outlook from threads of anxiety and fear. It’s an immediate and arresting record that lives on the same street as The Replacements, The Pastels, Billy Bragg, and The Chills, and it’s surely going to be a welcome neighbour.

As a songwriter, Kupa has absolutely nailed the art of transforming minute observations into familiar themes, making the ordinary seem grand and wonderous. As a singer, her instantly-recognisable voice lends everything she does a keen urgency that’s essential and undeniable. A Fenland force to be reckoned with.
