A fantastic Friday night with The Balkan Wanderers, an inspired traditional Balkan, Gypsy and Klezmer and contemporary world punk-ska band! In support, Mazaika will ignite the stage with Gypsy fire, tango passion, operatic melodrama and classical virtuosity, plus some hot club and hillbilly mayhem!
Inspired by Balkan artists, and world ska/punk pioneers (Šaban Bajramovi / Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra/ Xazzar, Mano Negra/ Golem/ Gogol Bordello/ Dubioza kolektiv), the Oxford-based 6-piece Balkan Wanderers mix East-meets-West musical styles with high-octane renditions of traditional Eastern European folk, creating high-energy live shows and records. They've received radio play on BBC6 Music (Tom Robinson), and performed numerous shows, parties and festivals including Boomtown, Common People Oxford, Hoomstock (Croatia), Cornbury. The band went on hiatus in 2018, reforming in 2022 with a mix of new and original members.
In support, known for their dazzling virtuosity, intoxicating passion and spontaneous theatricality and humour, Mazaika will transport us from the fairytale Russian Steppe to the flickering Romany campfire, the elegance of the Concert Hall to the glitter of The Moulin Rouge. The duo, made up of Igor Outkine on vocals, accordion and his mind-blowing, genre-defying midi accordion, and the versatile and virtuosic violinist Sarah Harrison, who also brings her vocal talents to the proceedings and plays a mean Russian Domra, have spent two decades enchanting audiences from the Cadogan Hall to the Crazy Coqs, Glastonbury to The Green Note. Expect a unique, humorous and uplifting take on Russian Folk and Gypsy, Classical, Opera, Tango, Gypsy Jazz, Latin, Italian, French Chanson, Balkan Beat, Klezmer and evocative original material inspired by all of the above.
