Stephen Grew, piano
Marcus Vergette, double bass
Stave Day, Percussion
A night of improvised music from three entertaining and musically vibrant exponents of this genre. It’s always fresh, always new. Nobody knows what will happen, and where the musical urge will take them, as they play to express themselves, while also provoking and – crucially, listening to – then responding to each other.
Steve Day is the common link here, having played before with both Stephen and Marcus. This is their first meeting as a trio.
Steve Day writes:
“Stephen Grew is truly very different from any other keyboard player in the UK. He gets the jazz tag thrown at him, but anyone with antenna ears will hear for themselves, he's as near as any pianist gets to being a complete orchestral sonic. There's a massive melodic/ harmonic density; any idea of 'swing' can be mostly disregarded. It's replaced by something symphonic. Stephen rarely works with bass and drums. Marcus is probably best known for playing with Mike Westbrook. Whereas Westbrook intentionally leaves huge 'holes' in his compositions allowing a bassist to source space and time, Grew is constantly piling in melody. For me, playing drums, it's not a matter of supplying rhythm, rather, of creating an instant percussion score. This concert is a big challenge for all three of us.”
