Duo set + solo sets from Chris and Dominic and support from Pefkin

Soapsuds is the duo of C Joynes (guitar) and Dominic Lash (double-bass). First introduced by mutual friend and colleague Rhodri Davies, the pair have worked together regularly in a variety of contexts since Lash's relocation from Bristol to Cambridge in 2021.
As Soapsuds, they use the resonant physicality of the double bass and archtop guitar to explore territories of spontaneity where things may not be always what they seem. Theirmusic has a fluid shapeshifting quality, emerging from a process of free improvisation, spontaneous composition, and a free-wheeling exploration of popular and unpopular music of all stripes. Themes emerge and retreat, jolted by sudden hand-brake turns into rock’n’roll, tin-pan alley or hokey folk hoe-downs. Outbursts of jazz-punk skronk collapse
into minimalist abstraction and acoustic sensitivity. What seems to be a prearranged tune might be freely improvised, while those passages of abstract sonics might turn out to have been composed by Sun Ra or Charles Mingus.
Soapsuds play a music of simultaneous familiarity and elusiveness that is as satisfying to witness as it is impossible to pin down.

Soapsuds will headline with short preceding sets from C Joynes and Dominic Lash.

Over the last decade, C Joynes has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North West African music, and lifting proto-minimalist and improvised techniques from the European classical and avant-garde traditions.
Joynes has released 10 albums to date, including ‘Poor Boy On The Wire’ (2021), his first solo album dedicated wholly to the electric guitar; ‘The Borametz Tree’ (2019), recorded with long-term fellow travellers Dead Rat Orchestra; and ‘The Wild Wild Berry’, a collaboration with singer Stephanie
Hladowski (fROOTS Editors Choice Album Of The Year 2012, MOJO Top 5 Folk Albums 2012). He has recorded a number of sessions for BBC Radio 3. He has also played extensively across the UK, Europe
and the USA, sharing bills with a broad range of performers including Shirley Collins, Martin Carthy, Marc Ribot, Richard Dawson, Alasdair Roberts, Jack Rose, Josephine Foster, Sir Richard Bishop, Six Organs Of Admittance and 75 Dollar Bill.

Dominic Lash is a double bassist and guitarist working mostly in improvised and experimental music. He has (or has had) longstanding collaborations with musicians including John Butcher, Tony Conrad, Angharad Davies, Patrick Farmer, Bruno Guastalla, Alexander Hawkins, Heather Roche, Éliane Radigue, Steve Reid, Pat Thomas, Philipp Wachsmann and Alex Ward. He is currently based in Cambridge, where he runs the improvised music series Soundhunt together with N.O. Moore. His music has appeared on labels including Another Timbre, Confront, Emanem, Hathut, Shrike and his own Spoonhunt.

A rare 4 act bill from us!
Support from Pefkin, our own Queen of Sound in a very DIY style! Long-form psych-drone-folk hymnals - she may play a fully improvised set.
