Event Information

Boisdale of Canary Wharf welcomes back acclaimed trumpeter Jay Phelps and his all-star ensemble for a live performance of Kind of Blue, Miles Davis’ landmark 1959 album that reshaped the language of modern jazz.

Rather than reinterpretation, this performance stays close to the character of the original recording, with its measured pacing, subtle interplay and emphasis on space. Phelps leads a line-up of leading UK jazz musicians who approach the material with precision and sensitivity, allowing the music to unfold with clarity and restraint.

The set includes the album’s defining pieces, from the modal openness of "So What" to the lyrical flow of "Freddie Freeloader", the slow-burning groove of "All Blues" and the shifting textures of "Flamenco Sketches". These compositions remain among the most recognisable works in jazz, studied and performed worldwide.

Released in 1959, Kind of Blue is widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz recordings of all time, introducing a modal approach that moved away from complex chord changes towards a more spacious, melodic framework. Miles Davis’ work on this album continues to shape jazz performance and education to this day. This concert also follows the success of Jay Phelps’ stage production MILES., which enjoyed a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe and continues with an extended production in 2026 marking the centenary of Davis’ birth.
