David Wilkins is a stone mason, carver and sculptor whose work can be found in St George's Chapel Windsor, and whose roots are firmly in this corner of Hampshire. Growing up in Four Marks and educated at Alton College, David went on to study Architectural Stone Carving at the City & Guilds London School of Art before building a career that has taken in work for the National Trust, York Cathedral, and, most recently, his acclaimed Chalklander collection: a series of sculptures inspired by the flint and chalk of the southern downlands.
In this half-day introduction, David brings a career's worth of expertise to a small group of just five participants. You'll be introduced to the basic skills, techniques, safety training and design principles of stone carving, before getting to work on your own relief carving from a selection of provided designs. A block of limestone and all tools are included – and by the end of the session, you'll have something you carved yourself to take home.
There will be two sessions: 9am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 5pm.
