La Cozna brings together musicians Clémentine Ristord (bass clarinet, drone box), Benjamin Garson (electric guitar), Pierre-Antoine Despatures (double bass) and Nicolas Jacobée (vocals). The quartet takes a series of traditional French songs from 20th-centur collections and brings them into the present. Passed down in whispers in the secrecy of kitchens, these women's songs are stories of love, violence and freedom that play on domination with humour, drama and poetry. In Ni Nuit Ni Jour, the ambiguity of the lyrics flirts with a feverish sound, tense with desire and darkness.
Persona is Raquel Vogl and Claire Williams, a duo of guitar and voice, based in
Sheffield, UK. Before relocating to Sheffield, Raquel was a dedicated participant of
the long standing experimental punk music communities of New York and
Washington DC.
Claire (aka Myrtle) sang in the Canyon Family and Former Lover (with Dorian Cox of
the Long Blondes). Described in various places as: “a dream pop take on early Rough Trade sounds. The edgy softness of The Young Marble Giants applied to the pop sense of The Modettes. “ Brian Coley - The Wire
“Genuinely sinister, with harrowing lyrics…within a stark musical setting that puts an
inventive spin on post pink and DIY pop.”
“Like a skeleton being taken apart and reassembled.”
“Sheffield's very own post punk, minimalist duo. Holding a mirror to reflect today’s
miasma with a unique ethos for these times.”
