Laura Krieg
simultaneously channels the drama of a dusty cabaret and the kinetic mania of a banging basement rave. Minimal chugging synths strafe the dancers as she spits out insouciant, haunting, deadpan invocations over a taught backbone of disciplined drums. Harking back to synth-heavy 80s industrial sounds shot through with cold war paranoia, the contemporary sheen of the sound design drags the music back through the lens of modernity and dispels any pretentions to nostalgia. This music doesn't shy away from the unforgiving, bleak times we find ourselves in; instead it suggests that we may carry each other through with some glamour, sass and attitude.
SOFIA (MCA)
She makes pop-synth, in that order, yes. The softness and lightness of pop always comes first in her tracks, carried by her expansive, airy voice in purely feminine registers at their very best. Then, on a compositional level, she often recalls a wild, electric organist from a parish hidden in some alleyway of a walled city—her sound feels anachronistic and dancefloor-ready at once.
The truth is, SOFIA sounds like SOFIA, and when someone sounds like themselves, it’s quite difficult to categorize them—fortunately so. When she composes from her unique authenticity, she creates specific landscapes that you can only access through her, impossible in any other way.
Her songs always find a twisted way to distract us from the complexity of their depths.
Morreadoras
Four freewheeling lasses, nonchalantly cracking on with all the stuff that mainstream society says they're not allowed to do.
Their music is a sass grenade, spiced with uncanny dissonance, and seasoned with huge hooks to walk home singing drunkenly. Rabble-rousing punk with a chunk of no-wave style and a slab of spacetime anarchist attitude.
Add a slice of B52s-esque funk, wonk, and pop sensibility; bolt on a big old motorik engine; sprinkle with kosmische synth melodies, and step on the gas. No hi-hat; tons of red lipstick; fuelled by shots from the bar, bought by YOU.
PROTEUS&LESS THAN HUMAN DJset
Step into the fog. Surrender to the crushing techno rhythms and the echoes of the punk-fueled void. This is the conversation of the roots and the future — a ceremony of shadows.
