Lo-Fi Ensemble
PETE ROBSON
Pete Robson is an improvising pianist & trumpeter. Trained classically and in brass bands. He was a member of the London Musicians Collective in the 1980s and has followed a path in improvised musics and free jazz ever since. He was a member of The Improvised Music Ensemble in Portsmouth in the 1990s and of the Cheltenham Improvisers Orchestra in the early 2000s. He is very interested in working across genres. With TIME he composed Temenos a piece to accompany an exhibition of the sculpture of Maurice Owen on a national tour. He was worked closely with poets, actors and dancers exploring the relationship of improvised musics with words, visuals and movement. Recently this included a collaboration with the Butoh Dance collective Posthuman Theatre.
He is also an educator, currently co leading the Lo Fi Improvisation workshop at Longfield Hall in Camberwell: working to develop the community and practice of improving musicians across south London. Currently Pete is a key member of the expanding trio Ghostmind who combine improvised music with a found sound soundtrack. And throughout his musical life he has worked in a duo with percussionist Stu Wilding developing an intimate shared language and intuitive understanding of each others music.

STUART WILDING
Stuart Wilding is an improvising percussionist, playing a mixture of junk percussion, lap harp and cello. He is active in many current collaborations: Ghost Mind, Longstone, Lo-fi Ensemble, Mike Adcock duo, Pete Robson duo, Madrona, the Cheltenham Improvisers Orchestra, The Men They Couldn’t Dance To, and a new trio with Kaneng Lolang and Charlie Folorunshu. He currently runs the Lo-fi Improvised music Workshops in Camberwell. In the past he set up and ran Xposed Club promoting improvised music in Cheltenham. He has worked in several smaller improvising ensembles and with the Flying Down Trio, Hither Green Drone Orchestra and Makeshift. He played regularly at the LMC and was a performer and musician with the Hand in Glove Performance Group.

SIMON LAWSON
Simon Lawson is a saxophone and clarinet player. He played many pop and jazz gigs in the eighties and nineties including the Soho Jazz festival with Michael Horovitz and Dick Heckstall-Smith, alongside a residency at the BBC World Service bar. After a hiatus concentrating on the visual arts he has recently directed his musical passion to free improvisation after joining the Lo-fi Improvised Music Workshop in 2022 and more recently frequenting the London Improvisation Workshop. He can now be found regularly performing in satellite groups derived from these. He recently played the newly formed Improvox night at the Bridewell Theatre Bar in a duet with Matt Scott on accordion and is currently playing alongside Mario Guarnieri in a drums and sax duo as ‘Mario and Me’.

SAULIUS BENDORAITIS
Saulius Bendoraitis, a.k.a. Sound Break Project, is a lithuanian, electronic music performer and producer based in London. Using wide range of synthesizers, drum machines and electro acoustic instruments. Member of Lo Fi Ensemble. Played number of solo and collaboration improvised performances in London, Whitstable and Kaunas, Lithuania.

JO MORRISON
Joanne Morrison has a deeper interest in extended vocal techniques developed whilst participating in an Experimental Sound Art course at the Mary Ward Centre in 2020. Through lockdown she then joined the Groningen Vocal Exploration Choir online, which lead to introductions & collaborations with the free improv community in the UK. She has taken part in Maggie Nicols’ The Gathering, Faradena Afifi’s Noisy Peoples Orchestra, Sharon Gals SOUND OUT and co-created WHIP-MA-WHOP-MA-GATE with Milana Sarukhanyan, Iris Garrelfs & Faradena Afifi. She is now a member of The Noisy Women Present, sometimes performs with the London Improvisers Orchestra, occasionally joins the Virtual London Improvisation Workshop & thankfully experienced the open mic sessions at SKRONK (New River Studios) before they ended recently.

ADRIAN ROPER
Adrian has always sung, in choirs, as a singer -songwriter, folk singer, and more recently with the Lo-Fi improving Orchestra. In the past he has spent time making cassette tape collages and maintains a visual arts practice which shares an improvising impulse.

ANDREA BOLZONI
Andrea Bolzoni has a background as a jazz guitarist, and has been involved with improvised music for the last 15 years. He has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Electroacoustic Composition from the Milan Conservatory, and is currently a PhD student in AI and Music Creativity at The Open University. Andrea was a member and co-founder of Swedish Mobilia and Raw Frame, and performed in clubs and festivals in Italy, France and Eastern Europe. He released a solo album in 2015, ‘amI?’, and more recently ‘Music from the Lounge’, in duo with Francesco Zago, for Creative Sources. Some of his electroacoustic compositions have been performed at the Sound and Music Computing Conference, New York Electroacoustic Music Festival, and Festival Artescienza.

KOSTAS CHONDROS
Kostas Chondros plays alto saxophone, rabab, recorder, trumpet, melodica, and sundry objects. He has been involved with free improvisation for 15 years as a listener, filmmaker and player cutting his Reeth with John Russel’s Mopomoso. A regular attendee at Eddie Prevost’s Workshop and the Siobhan Davies Studio I have performed at the Vortex, Skronk, the Horse Hospital and the Hundred Years Gallery with musicians as diverse as Dave Tucker, Slyvia Hallett, Rick Jensen and Verity Lane and poets Roddy Lumsden, Alex Bell and Tom Bland.
With a background in social and visual anthropology he has made a number of films exploring improvisation, most notably, Notes on Gesture (2008) – with narration by Steve Beresford), Suspended (2015 – a collaboration with Italian sound artist Giovanni Lamie) and Waterpulse (2017 – part of longer film Zero by American composer Coleman Zurkowski). For many years he documented the regular improvisation sessions at the Vortex which may be viewed on the Mopomoso Youtube channel.

KEVIN BURROWS
Dr. KEVIN BURROWS comes from an arts and psychotherapy background. From art rock/ punk in the seventies to deep funk Jazz in the 90’s right through to improv fusion and spoken word of Jellywolf. Burrows has performed at the Roxy, the Jazz Cafe and the BBC.

ANTONIO ARCA
Antonio Arca is a Sardinian-born, adopted Londoner with a drumming and percussion style all the way from psychedelic stoner rock through improv ambient cinematic sounds to lo-fi instrumental soundscapes.
MICHAEL ZBYSZYNSKI
Michael Ferriell Zbyszyński is a musician, researcher and teacher in the field of contemporary electroacoustic music. He plays flute, saxophones, clarinets, Yamaha WX5 (MIDI wind controller), and things made from digitizing tablets, coffee cans, and PVC. Originally from the US, he holds a PhD in composition from the University of California, Berkeley. During the day, he is a developer of creative technologies at L-Acoustics.

JONNY MARTIN
Jonny K Martin is a sonic mangler, often wrestling with trumpet, flugelhorn, bass guitar & EBow, filtered through electronic brouhaha. Photographer. Maverick, apparently. Piano to trumpet to double bass and bass guitar, to 7-string bass guitar with effects, back to trumpet with added flugelhorn and effects. From classical to jazz and soul, to indie to experimental/drone/free improvised and whatever this is now.

Anthony Osborne is a saxophonist, operating in the areas of free jazz and free improvisation. He plays in both solo and group contexts, and also makes electronic music and short films.

Dominic Thurston is an Irish vocalist based in London. They are a member of experimental choral collective Musarc. Alongside their collective work, Dom has a burgeoning improvised practice, investigating the raw texture, spontaneity, and sonic possibilities of the human voice.
