Event information

“This is not only Horace Andy’s best album in 40 years, but it is also a work of lasting power.” — Mojo, on Midnight Rocker

Horace Andy’s voice does not behave like anyone else’s. High, fragile, devotional and instantly recognisable, it has carried roots reggae from Studio One sound systems to Massive Attack records, crossing generations without losing its spiritual centre.

Known affectionately as “Sleepy”, Andy has been recording since the late 1960s and remains one of Jamaica’s most distinctive singers. His early Studio One work produced cornerstone tracks including "Skylarking", "Every Tongue Shall Tell" and "Mr. Bassie", while his later collaborations with Massive Attack introduced his voice to a global audience beyond reggae. He is the only artist to appear on all five Massive Attack albums, a rare bridge between roots, dub and trip-hop.

For this rare Boisdale performance, Andy is joined by the Dub Asante Band featuring Matic Horns, bringing weight, brass and deep rhythmic authority to a set rooted in classics and later works. Expect "Skylarking", "Every Tongue Shall Tell" and "Mr. Bassie", alongside the deeper, spacious sound that has defined his recent work.

His 2022 album Midnight Rocker, produced by Adrian Sherwood for On-U Sound, received widespread critical acclaim and reaffirmed Andy’s standing as a living force in reggae rather than a heritage act. A dub companion album, Midnight Scorchers, followed later that year, and in 2024 he released Timeless Roots with Jah Wobble.

This is roots reggae at close range: voice, bass, brass and spirit, carried by one of the genre’s true originals.
