Event information

Experience the passion and power of Buenos Aires in a breath-taking evening of tango, folk music, and unforgettable song.

Internationally acclaimed vocalist Martín Alvarado joins forces with an exceptional guitar quartet, Gerardo Villar y Los Aguirre - fellow porteños from the city of the Rio de Plata, - to deliver an authentic musical journey from the heart of Argentina.

From the revolutionary works of Astor Piazzolla, to haunting zambas and original ballads, every performance is rich with emotion, artistry, and atmosphere.

Alvarado, celebrated worldwide for his mesmerising tenor voice, brings tango alive with intensity, charisma, and elegance, infusing a carefully-chosen repertoire, with warmth, colour, nuance and sensitivity.

His interpretations, whether singing with a full symphony orchestra, a jazz big band or troubadour style with just his voice and a guitar in front of a handful of people, have transcended language barriers and driven an illustrious two-decade globe-trotting career, awards and 11 album releases.

In recognition of his significance as a cultural ambassador for Argentina, the National Academy of Tango officially declared him as a Maestro in 2019.

It promises to be a concert that captivates audiences from the start and leaves an unforgettable impression.

The concert will be about two hours long including an interval. There will be a licensed bar. It will be open for an hour after the concert.

The venue is 20 minutes' walk from Collingham Railway Station. Please park considerately in the village.

On the door tickets: £20.

Celebrated both in the media and by his peers, Martín Alvarado has been described as “the best voice in Buenos Aires” and “21st Century voice of tango” and is known for pushing the musical boundaries of this much loved and globally recognised genre of music whilst avoiding the cliche.

In 2019, Alvarado was declared an “Academico” (Maestro) by the National Academy of Tango in recognition of his illustrious touring career of two decades during which he has performed in many major theatres, festivals and concert halls around the world.

In 2013 he won the Latin UK Award for Concert by International Artist of the Year and had an album released by one of the leading world music record labels: UK-based Riverboat Records, part of the World Music Network stable of labels which include the "Rough Guide to ..." titles.

Alvarado discovered his talent to sing at the age of 19 has drawn vocal influence from rock and pop as well as tango itself. He counts Stevie Wonder and former Deep Purple vocalist Glenn Hughes among his inspirations, along with the late tango legend, Rubén Juárez, who mentored Alvarado during the early days of his career.

In his twenties, Alvarado travelled to Spain where he was spotted singing in the street in Barcelona and invited to perform in Finland, where tango is a national pastime. News of his talent quickly spread and within two months of arriving there, he was performing with the Tampere Philharmonia Orchestra.
