Picky New Promotions and Abington Groove Records are excited to introduce American trio TCHOTCHKE to Northampton for October's Groove Session on Thurs Oct 8!
Like Pop Rocks hitting the tongue, New York’s Tchotchke is classic candy-coated rock’n’roll. Sweet on the outside but filled with surprises once properly ingested, the three-piece have been winning over audiences with their Rundgren-tinged sound and masterful harmonies since 2021.
Their second album, Playin’ Dumb, was released last year to great acclaim. Playin’ Dumb’s 11 tracks are more sophisticated and sonically complex than their previous work, leaning heavily into the band’s love of 60’s girl groups and outsider popsters like Harry Nilsson, Dolly Mixture, and Sparks. Channeling a Shangri-Las style of conversational vocals, the cast of characters that Tchotchke personifies in Playin’ Dumb also embody classic girl group traits of lovelorn winners and losers. The band thinks of these narrators as hyper-feminine caricatures of themselves, with aspects of their personalities amplified to the point of high drama.
Having toured across the USA, UK, and Europe with such dignitaries as the Gossip, The Lemon Twigs, The Make-Up, King Tuff, Broncho, Adam Green, Kate Bollinger, Hunx and His Punx, and The Paranoyds, they're set to bring their vintage pop, cheeky lyrics, and retro harmonies to shoe town for the first time.
“Eleven tracks full of satisfing hooks, clever songwriting, and kaleidoscopic meditations on what it means to fall in, out, and over love.”
Setlist Kitchen
"These young, old-souls are well-studied in mining the sounds and atmosphere of those and other retro ensembles. But they also incorporate a refined elegance in their economically-compact brand of pop bliss.”
The Indy Review
"The album sees the trio’s sound evolving and leveling up, wandering through guitar-driven rock to bluesy territories, all from their unique pop perspective.”
Alt Press
“[‘Poor Girl’] will get stuck in your head before it’s even reached the halfway point.”
