We are Arundo5 - a reed quintet. A reed quintet consists of Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bass Clarinet and Bassoon. It is joyful, colourful and deeply expressive, but you might not have heard one yet! Every piece in this programme was composed, adapted or arranged by or for Arundo5, as we strive to increase the work available for quintets like ours.
This line up of instruments was dreamt up in the 1990s by an innovative group of Dutch musicians, and an innovative spirit is what Arundo5 has inherited. In choosing our programme we have picked works by composers who are known for rearranging their own pieces. You might be familiar with these beautiful pieces by Brahms, Debussy and Cole Porter. Here we have a fresh and faithful reimagining of them.
Craic is a new composition by Benjamin Ellin. It is, as the name suggests, really good fun. Benjamin is currently engaged with composing his Second Symphony and some of his ideas, both structurally and materially, have found outlets in this brilliant little piece. It’s full of life and vigour and we’re excited to premier it at New Mills.
Nigel Woods is a British composer and saxophonist. He’s familiar to many musicians, not least saxophonists, for his extensive output of works and arrangements, some of which are staples of the grade exam syllabus. His work seems instantly familiar, drawing on well-known styles and presenting them with vitality. Highly melodic and with plenty of rhythmic drive, Nigel’s work is always a hit with audiences.
