Event information

20 year old BBC Young Musician of the Year Finalist George Johnson has a “really rounded and mature sound.” - London Jazz News.

Johnson’s expressive sound on the saxophone alongside his unique compositions, exploring not only the jazz tradition but also groove, gospel and English folk in his music. Johnson leads his own quartet joined by Zaki Osahn, Scottie Thompson and King David Ike-Elechi, with whom he has performed sold out shows at venues such as The Vortex, Hampstead Jazz Club, Ladbroke Hall to mention a few. Separate from his own music, he also features regularly as a sideman for Knats, Oreglo, recording and touring with Yellowdays, Geordie Greep and My New Band Believe as well as joining his colleagues at conservatoire in the Lior Solomons-Wise and Oscar Lyons quartets. Currently at the Royal Academy of music, studying with the likes of British and international jazz pioneers such as Julian Siegel, Giacomo Smith, Alex Hitchcock and Rachael Cohen, Johnson is also experienced in section playing, having been part of numerous big band and small band projects at the Academy, some of which were lead by the likes of Kit Downes, Dave Holland and Leon Foster Thomas. One of the most exciting young talents in jazz, George Johnson is one to watch out for.
