In this workshop you’re invited to create a little cast of fantasy characters in the form of articulated paper puppets! A variety of templates will be provided for you to build the outline of your puppet, as well as materials for creating your own shapes and forms if you choose. After you’ve made the silhouette, you’ll have a host of pattern sheets and photographs from which you can collage the clothing and features of your character as well as illustrated faces, hands, clothing, wings, and other fantasy features to add to your designs.
This session is all about the creative potential of collage; how you can adapt existing imagery in unconventional ways to express your vision, and spark imagination. Flower petals become skirts, painted tiles become embroidered brocades, a tangle of electrical wire becomes a nest of curly hair, a decorative button becomes a halo. You are encouraged to get weird with it! Collage is a great way to start thinking laterally about art, and improve your powers of abstraction. An oft repeated aphorism is that 90% of art is observation, and my hope is that this workshop will help you to train your eye towards slowing down and deconstructing the visual world that surrounds us all into the components for something new.
This event is open to everyone and suitable for all ages. All materials will be provided, and you are welcome to take some home if you want to make more.
Free, donations welcome.
