Event information

The Inscape Jazz Quartet is a newly formed jazz combo that presents a captivating set of original music inspired by the poetry of Gerard Manly Hopkins and his concept of "Inscape" (the unique essence of things). Lyrical, thoughtful and poetic is the order of the day, they also include well-loved standards to lend some familiar sounds for the listener. This Quartet brings together some of the UKs most exciting talent to create an ensemble that offers both soulful and fresh sounds.
Nathan Hayward graduated in 1999 with a BA in music (jazz) earning first class honours. Since then, he has gained much performance experience playing many and various jazz piano and bass gigs. He has taught piano and violin in a range of schools, both primary and secondary, in Kent, Bromley, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.
Saxophonist and composer Nick Willsher, originally from the South Coast, studied at the Purcell School of Music and later specialised in jazz saxophone, piano, and composition at the Royal Academy of Music. He is active in London’s contemporary jazz scene, performing original long-form compositions inspired by the skies and collaborating with artists like Tara Minton.
Born and raised in Cornwall, bassist Marcus Penrose relocated to London at the age of 18 and over the ensuing years he has performed in countless musical lineups throughout London, the UK and Europe. With a wonderfully deep sound and modern swing feel, his playing is genuinely creative and cliche free. He also writes extremely well with an advanced understanding of harmony and an ear for a beautiful melody.
Simon Whiting studied at the Guildhall School Of Music and Drama (Mmus) and Canterbury Christ Church University (BMus). Always keen to learn more about drumming, Simon has also studied privately with Bob Armstrong. Simon has also had the unique opportunity to work with Magpie Dance as a musician for their classes and shows. This has given him experience of playing with and composing for the dancers which has been seen and heard at independent film and dance festivals around the world.
Join jazz pianist and composer, Nathan Hayward with his quartet performing innovative arrangements of jazz standards together with soulful and boundary-pushing compositions. This is sure to be an evening of inventive jazz moving between tradition and exploration, promising a journey as thought-provoking as it is beautiful.
