Event information

An evening of experimental folk music in the warmth and magic of By Our Hands We Make Our Way with:

PEFKIN

Gayle Brogan performs solo under the name Pefkin, creating slowly-unfolding, ritualistic hymnals that draw heavily on the landscape and natural world, using processed violin/viola, electronics, voice and field recordings.

She has released albums internationally on labels such as Morc, Wild Silence, Nite Hive, Folklore Tapes and Sonido Polifonico. She is also one half of innovative folk duo Burd Ellen, a third of psychedelic electric folk trio Meadowsilver, a member of megalith-inspired trio MMM (with Elizabeth Still and Nick Jonah Davis), and has collaborated with cult Irish singer-songwriter Alison O'Donnell and modular synth composer Jonathan Sharp.

Pefkin emerged after the retro-futuristic psych / electronic duo Electroscope went into hibernation in 2000. She has released over 20 albums, most recently "The Rescoring" on Penelope Trappes' Nite Hive label, an album of sonorous viola drone layered with uneasy electronics and songs that reflect on transformation and change, and “Unfurling”, released in January 2026 by Belgian label Morc. Gayle moved from Scotland to Sheffield in 2023 and now co-promotes a highly respected series of gigs in a Tudor museum in Sheffield.

Pefkin’s music has received comparisons to Coil, Popul Vuh, This Mortal Coil and Nico.

JACKEN ELSWYTH

Jacken Elswyth is a London-based folk musician, banjo player and instrument builder.

In her music-making she is focused on exploring traditional tunes, developing extrapolations on folk styles and techniques, and investigating drone, ambience, and improvisation within and beyond folk music. Jacken’s third solo album, At Fargrounds, was released by Wrong Speed in 2024 and was named as one The Quietus’ Albums of the Year.

Jacken organises the Betwixt & Between tape series and plays in the brilliant Shovel Dance Collective. She also builds and repairs banjos and other instruments, with a focus on folk craft and vernacular styles. This practice and these instruments inform and facilitate her music-making.

MELANIE PEGGE

Melanie Pegge’s uniquely unhindered nylon guitar and whispering vocals meander through dreamy alt-folk landscapes, exploring the strange and magical depths of being a human. Melanie will be performing in a new duo with Leicester-based artist and musician Francis O Donnell Smith on drums. Atmospheric, experimental, pastoral.
