Join us for a 50-minute tour and Q&A opportunity with the host of a retrofitted 1920s semi-detached, solid-wall brick house, who has comprehensive data recording the effects of his energy reduction installations, which include ...
• ASHP & Batteries (2026): 5kW Baxi ASHP and 12kWh of battery storage installed under the Haringey Group Buy Power Boost scheme, facilitating disconnection of the gas supply.
• New EPC rating (2026): Revised value of B83 (c.f. D59 after Solar Panel installation).
• External wall insulation (2023): 100mm EPS insulation to all three sides of the house, giving a new U-value for the walls of less than 0.3 W/m2K (down from 2.1 W/m2K).
• Loft bedroom refurb (2025): enhanced the existing double-glazed windows with insulating and blackout honeycomb electrically operated blinds; added extra insulation to the ceiling; installed smart LED lighting; 200mm glass-fibre insulation on all surfaces within loft-storage spaces.
• Internal wall insulation (2021): Whilst redecorating a cold room prior to the EWI being installed, we utilised Sempatap internally to improve the wall insulation, reducing the U-value of the 9” solid external wall by 13%.
• Solar panels (2019): 4 x PV panels giving 1.3kW, generating c. 700kWh pa.
• Underfloor insulation: 100mm glass-fibre insulation between floor-joists installed via 0.5m crawl space.
• Double glazing: -Leaded double-glazing windows in original style.
• Lighting: Vast majority of lights are now LED bulbs.
• Heat loss monitoring: A set of hygrometers are utilised before and after project activity, monitored from Home Assistant, to quantify improvements in the heat retention of the building. Complemented by FLIR heat-images comparisons.

For 14 years, Muswell Hill Sustainability Group has been running a free three-week Green Open Homes season every November, including expert speaker meetings on a range of energy efficiency topics, and tours of a cross section of 10 – 15 local homes that have been future-proofed against heat, cold, energy bills and emissions, amongst other climate change threats. They range from quick fixes to major installations to entire builds, with the intention of offering unbiased, experienced and - where professionals are present - expert advice; to inspire, inform and encourage visitors considering similar.
