Describing themes of his material as ''Connection (and disconnection) to the landscape'', songs like 'Winter Hill Trespass' and 'A Right to Roam' have gained the attention of UK Folk scene, with 'A Right to Roam' earning the accolade of 'One of the best Folk songs of 2022' by Tradfolk. With press from Folk on Foot, BBC Countryfile Plodcast and BBC Radio 4's Open Country, the Right to Roam advocate, and writer for Country Walking Magazine, Johnny's work has touched many corners of the Folk, activist and outdoor networks, like Right to Roam.

Johnny's recent album 'True North', is described as a ''Psychogeography Field Trip'' (MOJO) in which Johnny field recorded traditional songs of Northern England on each of the county high points. None other than Richard Thompson put it in his top 5 albums of the 2024 in MOJO. Last year he became the first person to tour the Pennine Way for the 60th anniversary of the route's inception. Collaborating with the National Trails Network, Johnny toured/walked Britain's first long distance path, carrying a guitar, performing 17 shows in 19 days over 268 miles. This late 2026 tour in support of his singles 'John Clare's Dream' and 'Trespass', taking him across UK, Scandinavia and Europe, finishing close to the end of the year with a hometown show of Cafe Nine.
