Event information

The sound of An Dannsa Dub (The Dub Dance in Gaelic) is coined by the band as "future dub from ancient Scotland." It is the brain child of Tom Spirals and Euan McLaughlin who formed the band back in 2020. The project fuses the mystical energy and instruments of traditional Scottish music and Gaelic song with heavy, meditative driving basslines and digital Dub music. With both highly skilled musicians from the traditional music scene and the soundsystem community An Dannsa Dub's live shows are a pulsating melting pot of high energy vibes and top quality musicianship. They summon the joyous, communal energy of a ceilidh and a sound system session featuring a line up of fiddle, flute/electronics, guitar, bass and drums.

Since the beginning of their journey, the band have taken their unstoppable sound to world audiences and multiple UK headline tours with busy summer festival calendars. They have performed to 10,000 at Boomtown hidden woods stage, a sold out show at Celtic Connections, The Glade stage at Glastonbury, headlined Ariano Folk festival in Italy and Goa Sunsplash in India - the list keeps growing as does the popularity of the band.

Their first release, 2021's self titled EP brought the group worldwide acclaim and was aired widely on UK radio including BBC6 Music. Two albums have since been released to eager fans which have included a diverse range of incredible guests including Junior Dread, Lewis McLaughlin, Jose Duncan Horseman, Corto Alto and more. They were nominated for best live act at the MG Alba Trad Music Awards 2023 and also for best live act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards 2023. The An Dannsa Dub EP was nominated as Best Original Work in the 2022 Scottish Traditional Music awards.

"The roots of folk and dub are deeply intertwined. An Dannsa succeeds in capturing the best of each tradition in a thoroughly original and exciting manner." Mungo's Hi Fi

Opening proceedings on the night are Starling Sessions - Oxford’s own 30 piece (!) beloved global folk community orchestra. Each member of this must-see international project brings to the group a song or a tune from their own heritage, and from these disparate traditions they create a mosaic of the contemporary city.

Their music spans continents and ranges from deep qawwali grooves, Appalachian harmony, and the tubthumping rowdiness of European drinking songs, all bound by the universally human themes of love, labour, kinship, and revelry. Prepare for their highly energetic, musically adventurous, and life-affirmingly joyous celebration of the songs and people that have transcended borders and found a home here in Oxford.
