Hosted at a beautiful subterranean art gallery next to Borough tube station, virtuoso vibraphonist Nat Steele brings his quartet to Studio Sienko, featuring an all-star lineup of some of London's best jazz musicians. Expect a foot-tapping mixture of classic jazz standards, nifty arrangements and jazz originals.
Studio Sienko is an independent art gallery run by Polish artist Olga Sienko, founded in 1993, with a beautiful Boston grand piano and occasionally host to live concerts.
Nat has been a regular performer on the UK and European jazz scene for 15 years, regularly playing around the UK at jazz festivals and major clubs like Ronnie Scott's and the 606. Principally self-taught and following in the style of Milt Jackson, Nat takes a two mallet approach to improvisation, focusing on melodic interpretation. He lists his influences as Jackson, Victor Feldman, Cal Tjader, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Sonny Rollins and many others.
His debut album "Portrait of the Modern Jazz Quartet” was awarded “Jazz Album of the Month” by BBC Music Magazine, with a plethora of excellent reviews, including 4 stars in The Observer and Jazzwise Magazine. His new album, "Afternoon In Paris" was released earlier this year on Resonator Records and has already received extremely positive press, being the subject of a 2-page feature in Jazzwise Magazine (4.5 stars) in August.
The band features the outstanding young Canadian pianist Sean Fyfe, who until a few years ago was based in New York and is now making waves in London, Simon Read on bass (regularly with Joe Webb among others) and Mark Taylor on drums, who was based in New York for 25 years and has played with everyone you can possibly think of - Ray Brown, Lew Tabackin and Monty Alexander, to name just a few.
This gig is part of a warm-up for a recording and filming session later in the week.
