Play the gamelan — beautiful bronze percussion instruments from Central Java, played
together as a group
Learn Javanese dance — gentle, refined and slow movements that tell the story of a young man in love

A rare opportunity to learn traditional Javanese dance and gamelan together! This
combined workshop offers a fun and accessible way to gain insight into a rich and complex
culture by having a go yourself. You’ll learn some basic dance moves and a traditional piece
of Javanese music and understand how closely they work together.

The afternoon will be led by experienced teachers Jo Shaw and Jenny Heaton, who both studied in Java. It will culminate in an informal performance including workshop participants, players from the South Devon Gamelan who meet regularly in Ashburton, visitors from Bristol Community Gamelan and a solo dance by Jo Shaw, accompanied by the gamelan.

Practical information
Playing gamelan involves sitting on the floor: we will provide cushions, but please feel free to bring a low stool or large cushion as you need to feel comfortable.
Dancing will be barefoot: please wear loose clothing. No previous experience necessary!
