Braw Gigs presents a very special evening with Tony Morris in Pianodrome, Bruntsfield on Saturday 20th March. A performance in the round from one of Glasgow’s finest men of leisure and wordplay, inside one of Edinburgh’s most unique looking and sounding venues. Morris’s act has been described as ‘deviant cabaret’, a description he is happy to accept.
The past 18 months have been pretty busy with record releases on Optimo and Huntleys and Palmers, the latter with Isa Gordon. His unique vocal stylings have appeared on releases by Gramrcy & John Loveless; Josh Wink & Christopher Coe; and more recently COMB. Along with Isa Gordon and sometimes on his own, he has played venues all across Scotland and recently Berghain in Berlin. In September he was commissioned by Radiophrenia to do a Live-to-air performance in Glasgow, in addition he presents a regular monthly show on Clydebuilt Radio, plus a brand new release with Organza Ray with the collaborative track MAVRA VALISTA.
Support will come from Bell Lungs, the moniker of Scottish-Turkish vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and creative facilitator Ceylan Hay. Taking a freewheeling, magpie attitude to ambient, noise, free improvisation, psychedelia, jazz, post-rock, minimalism and folk, her music creates subtly shifting sound worlds drawing on natural cycles, environmental disaster and the microcosmic aspects of relationships. A vaguely obsessive instrument collector, she integrates vocals, strings, keys, tuned percussion and woodwinds into lushly textured layers and loops. However, it is her vocal mastery which is most striking, a resonant instrument acting as a conduit for the emotions, described in reviews as “disarming” and “vaulting”.
