The Shelley Memorial Project is a Community Interest Company based in Horsham and formed by Shelley enthusiasts from across the country, dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the legacy of Percy Bysshe Shelley through the arts, heritage, community, and education. The Project aims to commission a permanent memorial that will celebrate Horsham's most famous citizen and create a physical reference to the poet, appreciated and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Percy Bysshe Shelley 1792-1822
Shelley is one of our major English Romantic poets. A radical in his poetry as well as his political and social views, he was born in Warnham, a village in the district of Horsham, West Sussex.
Why the Shelley Memorial Project?
Despite international recognition of Shelley's contribution to literature and social and political thought, there is no public commemoration of the life and work of this towering literary figure in the town most associated with his birth and early life.
By highlighting Horsham's essential links to one of the best-known Romantic poets we will mark our town's place within the nation's cultural heritage, inspiring talent within our community and placing particular emphasis on young talent as represented by Shelley's phenomenal body of work, achieved in his short life.
What is the Shelley Memorial?
The memorial will be a commissioned artwork by the sculptor Vincent Gray, following the outcome of our open competition. It will be located in Horsham Park in the heart of the town.
How you can support us?
We need to raise £100,000 to complete the project and install the memorial in Horsham Park. We have raised more than 20% of this figure so far. More contributions are needed to achieve our objective.
We are fundraising in a number of different ways, including organising events throughout the year. Thank you for your support.
If you would like to donate to the project please visit our website www.shelleymemorialproject.co.uk/donate
