Beware of the Bull – A Celebration of Jake Thackray
Accomplished singer and biographer Paul Thompson presents an evening celebrating the extraordinary songs and remarkable life of Jake Thackray, one of our greatest, funniest and most original songwriters.
Paul will be singing the Yorkshireman’s hilarious, poetic, irreverent, unique songs and giving colourful insights into his remarkable life. He’ll be performing the songs on Nadine, a guitar which Jake once owned and named. Paul has performed, to great acclaim, at shows all over the country, as well as on the radio. His album, Playing with Nadine, includes his recordings of Thackray songs which have never been previously released (available from www.paulthompsonmusic.co.uk).
Paul is the co-author of an acclaimed biography, Beware of the Bull – The Enigmatic Genius of Jake Thackray. The book reveals that Jake’s life was as extraordinary as his writing: the hard childhood in the terraces of Leeds, strict Catholic education and formative experiences in France and war-torn Algeria; the first career as an inspirational, unorthodox, highly creative teacher; the meteoric development as a writer and performer, and discovery by the BBC; the Abbey Road recordings and impact on The Beatles; the fame and fortune brought by a remarkable television career…and Jake’s rejection of it. It is the story of a complex, charismatic, self-effacing man whom many loved, but few understood.
