“Conclave” — directed by Edward Berger of “All Quiet on the Western Front” acclaim — adapts Robert Harris’s novel of the same name into a gripping political thriller.
The film follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting the new Pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the dead Pope’s wake. Surrounded by powerful religious leaders in the halls of the Vatican, he soon uncovers a trail of deep secrets that could shake the very foundation of the Roman Catholic Church.
The cast alone is reason to line up for Conclave. Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. These talents are so rightfully heralded for their stirring gravitas and their chemistry on-screen together.
Conclave received eight nominations at the 97th Academy Awards (including Best Picture), six at the Golden Globe Awards (winning Best Screenplay), and tied with Wicked for a leading 11 nominations at the 30th Critics' Choice Awards (including Best Picture) and won two awards for Best Adapted Screenplay & Best Acting Ensemble.
The secrets at the centre of this Vatican-set tale are rich with intrigue, sharp humour, and provocative plot twists.
