Event information

Take a walk around the old fishing town of Leigh-on-Sea, collecting sounds as you go.

Hosted by sound veteran Brad Acton, you’ll be taken through the entire process of collecting sounds and noises, finding inspiration, types of microphones and recorders, the philosophy behind the noise as well as categorisation and storage.

You’ll then head to 'No Place Like Home' in Leigh Marina for a drink of your choosing as you are guided through different ways to use your sounds and turn them into something you might want to share or maybe even release.

Meet at 10 am on Sunday morning by the big red buoy (WhatThreeWords///flap.cheek.glaze) next to The Crooked Billet Pub and Osbornes Sea Food.

We will walk along through Old Leigh as we talk about the philosophy of sound, collecting as we go. You'll get a chance to try out some contact microphones and a hydrophone as you become inspired by your surroundings.

You are welcome to bring your own recorder and we definitely recommend bringing your own headphones; however, we do have some you can use and share.

After working our way along Old Leigh talking about various microphones and techniques, we will head back up past the cockle sheds and gather in a very cool little spot called "No Place Like Home” in Leigh Marina for a beverage of your choice.
You’ll also be shown some techniques for cleaning and manipulating the sounds (or not) in preparation to be turned into a musical composition, and we can chat about different DAWs.
We’ll cover a spectrum of music from conventional to improvised.

You’ll leave with a recommended reading list, listening list, as well as local places to hear improvised music.

You get to keep the sounds you collected.

The weather is unpredictable so dress accordingly, you may want to bring a notepad and pen too.

Spaces are limited, so book early.
