Event information

Green for Danger is a 1946 British mystery thriller film, based on the 1944 detective novel of the same name by Christianna Brand. One of six humorous whodunits featuring Inspector Cockrill of the Kent County Police directed by Sidney Gilliat and stars Sally Gray, Trevor Howard, Rosamund John, Leo Genn, and Alastair Sim. The film was shot at Pinewood Studios in England. The title is a reference to the colour-coding used on the gas cylinders used by anesthetists.

A Classic British murder-mystery, set in August 1944, German flying bombs are raining down on London. Directly under their flight path is a small cottage hospital, where the tension is becoming unbearable for the dedicated team of surgeons and nurses. Their close-knit community is torn apart by jealousy and terrible secrets, and when the local postman is brought in, delirious but trying to impart an urgent message - the murders begin. The eccentric and irreverent Inspector Cockrill (Sim) of the Kent County Police is called in to investigate a truly baffling case where everyone has secrets, but where no-one appears to have a motive

A remarkable mixture of sly comedy and genuine thrills, with the sardonic and sarcastic humour of the protagonist providing a good counterpoint to the darkly atmospheric surroundings of the hospital - shot with considerable panache by Launder and Gilliat's regular cameraman Wilkie Cooper.
