William Friedkin directs one of the most horrifying movies ever made. When a charming 12-year-old girl takes on the characteristics and voices of others, doctors say there is nothing they can do. --and that her daughter's only possible hope lies with two priests and the ancient rite of demonic exorcism

As people begin to die, the girl's mother realizes her daughter has been possessed by the devil.  A local priest (Jason Miller) makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job.

The director's cut includes a famous, highly disturbing sequence where the possessed Regan crawls backward down the stairs like a spider

Produced by William Peter Blatty, who adapted his own 1971 novel.
One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events.

The Exorcist is a stylistic landmark for the supernatural horror genre and widely considered one of the greatest—and most unsettling—horror movies ever made.
